1985, 121 pages, b/w frontispiece, 115 b/w illustrations, maps. This book provides a means of identifying adults of the various species of the families Silphidae and Agyrtidae and larvae of the various species of Silphidae known to occur in Canada and Alaska. It reviews available biological information (as of 1985), and documents the distribution of all these species in North America. Illustrated keys are given for identification of adults and known larvae of all species of North American silphids, north of Mexico, and of adults of all genera and species of North American agyrtids, north of Mexico. Keys to larvae and larval diagnoses are based on third instar larvae. Only those species occurring in Canada or Alaska are treated in further detail.
Species treatments include:

brief diagnosis of the larva (if known)
brief statement of the species distribution
