An old and successful method for taking insects is to knock them from branches of shrubs and trees onto a collecting sheet. The user strikes or shakes a branch with one hand while holding the sheet underneath at one corner with the other hand. Specimens
falling onto the sheet are picked up by forceps, aspirator, or camel hair brush.
Two models are available. Both sheets are securely hemmed on all sides, with double pockets on all four corners.
Canvas Beating Sheet
The 2840C sheet is made of sturdy natural canvas (marine boat cover), for easy visibility of insects as they are knocked onto the
fabric. It is 28" (71 cm) square. Two sanded oak cross members are connected with a brass pivot fastener. Collapsed for portability, the beating sheet frame is 37" (94cm) long.
Ripstop Beating Sheet
The larger 2840R is made of very lightweight nylon ripstop. Insects are highly visible on the shiny white fabric, and are unable to cling to the sheet because of the ripstop’s extremely close weave characteristic. the sheet is 39" (1 meter) square. The collapsible frame consists of four 26" (66cm) sections of PVC plastic tubing, and a 4-way connector. Collapsed length is 26". Shorter frame sections of this
model recommend its use for travel by plane or on foot.
