This latest innovation in mosquito traps is a result of over 16 years of thorough scientific research at the University of Regensburg, Germany. It was initially developed for scientists and researchers all over the world to monitor the yellow fever mosquito, also known as the dengue mosquito, Aedes aegypti, and the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus. During its use on different continents, it became evident that the BG-Sentinel™ also catches other mosquito species and anthropophilic insects. It is intended for use by professionals only. Numerous independent scientific studies have been conducted with the BG-Sentinel™ trap worldwide, and it has been successfully proven to be the most effective mosquito trap on the market. It is used and tested all over the world by independent organizations. The trap incorporates patented, as well as patent pending technology. It mimics the convection currents that are created by a human body via artificially generated air plumes, employs attractive visual cues, and releases a patented 3-component scent imitator, the BG-Lure®, that mimics human skin through a large surface area. These features were specifically developed for attracting tiger mosquitoes The BG-Sentinel™, together with the BG-Lure®, catches Aedes albopictus, Aedes aegypti, Aedes polynesiensis, and various Culex ssp., significantly well. These species of mosquitoes are the transmitters of serious diseases such as West Nile Virus, Dirofilariasis, Dengue, Chikungunya, and Yellow Fever. When CO2 is added to the trap, it catches these species as well as a very broad range of other mosquitoes and anthropophilic insects. There is also a UV Light set that can be attached to the trap to catch biting midges, Culicoides spp., the transmitters of Blue Tongue disease and Leishmaniasis. The trap is large enough to incorporate additional attractants (such as animal hairs, worn clothing, small animals, food, light and heat sources) making it a very versatile tool for other researchers. This novel monitoring trap for mosquitoes was developed by BioGents GmbH (Germany) utilizing patent pending technology. The trap consists of an easy-to-transport, collapsible white cylinder with white mesh covering the top. In the middle of the mesh cover is a black tube through which a down flow is created by a 12V DC fan that causes mosquitoes in the vicinity of the opening to be sucked into a catch bag. The catch bag is located above the suction fan to avoid damage to specimens passing through the fan. The air then exits the trap through the mesh top. This design generates ascending current similar to that produced by a human host, both in its direction, geometrical structure, and chemical composition of the attractants. Attractants are given off by the BG-Lure® 2881, a mesh dispenser that releases a combination of non-toxic substances found on human skin (lactic acid, ammonia, and fatty acids). The lure releases the long-lasting attractant for up to five months. An Octenol lure 2882, active for two months, is also provided. Originally developed to attract the yellow fever or dengue mosquito Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti, laboratory and field tests show that the trap is also attractive for a range of other anthropophagic mosquitoes. Trials have also demonstrated good catch rates for the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus, A. polynesiensis), southern and northern house mosquitoes (Culex quinquefasciatus, C. pipiens), and malaria mosquitoes (Anopheles species). Carbon dioxide is not required to catch Aedes aegypti, A. polynesiensis, or A. albopictus, but it can be added as an attractant for other species. The trap features a unique pop-up design. No tools are required for assembly. The unit operates on 120/240 volt AC electrical current, or from a 12 volt DC battery, available separately 2861A. To keep the battery charged and ready for use, see 2865 battery charger. The trap draws 300 mA of 12 VDC. A BG-Lure® and an Octenol lure are included, along with two catch bags and a two-handled green nylon ripstop carrying case. Dimensions: collapsed - diameter 35 cm, height 10 cm; assembled - diameter 35 cm, height ~40 cm. Weight: 1.5 kg (3.4 lbs.). A useful accessory to this trap is the 2823 CO² gas regulator kit designed for use in areas where dry ice cannot be obtained or is not desired.
